CFA Level III – Study Plan 2026

Designed around constructed-response mastery and the latest Level III syllabus structure.

  • Overview
  • Instructor's Notes
  • Video Explanation

Level III rewards clarity of thought. This plan pairs syllabus readings with IPS, essay, and item-set drills so every concept you learn immediately becomes a recommendation or calculation. Expect weekly feedback loops with peers or mentors—explaining your thinking is the surest way to prepare for the constructed-response exam.

Download the agenda, map the weeks to your exam window, and reserve weekend slots for full essay questions. If you fall behind, protect the IPS and risk management sections first—they drive a disproportionate share of the morning score.

Week-by-week Roadmap

Each block blends syllabus readings with essay and item-set practice.

Weeks 1-2

Culture & behavioural foundations

ETH + BF
  • Refresh Standards I–VII with essay-style prompts—write short memos defending or rejecting analyst behaviour.
  • Document each behavioural bias, observable clues, and IPS implications for risk tolerance or return expectations.
  • Practice turning qualitative situations into recommendation statements that earn full marks.

Weeks 3-4

Individual IPS drills

IPS
  • Create templates for IPS structure (return requirement, risk tolerance, liquidity, taxes, legal, unique).
  • Solve at least three historical morning-session questions, time-boxed to 18 minutes each.
  • Summarise how life-cycle stages change portfolio recommendations and cite supporting numerical evidence.

Weeks 5-6

Institutional IPS & capital markets

IPS + CM
  • Map out the risk/return/duration profile for pensions, endowments, banks, and insurers. Highlight how spending needs affect the mandate.
  • Connect capital market expectation frameworks to IPS updates—run through Singer-Terhaar, macro forecasts, and regime-switching commentary.
  • Write a two-page capital market outlook that justifies every assumption with data.

Weeks 7-8

Strategic & tactical allocation

AA + FI
  • Practice corner portfolios, resampled frontiers, and Black-Litterman inputs to support recommendation-grade answers.
  • Tackle liability-driven investing and cash-flow matching for both individual and institutional mandates.
  • Run calculation drills for duration management, futures overlays, and rebalancing corridors.

Weeks 9-10

Implementation across asset classes

FI + EQ
  • Deep dive active fixed income, credit hedging, and curve strategies; summarise when each technique adds value.
  • Review equity portfolio management (active vs. passive, smart beta, concentrated portfolios) and alternatives (PE, RE, commodities).
  • Translate strategy decisions into essay-ready justifications that cite risk constraints.

Weeks 11-12

Risk management & derivatives

RM
  • Link VAR, CVaR, stress testing, and scenario analysis to policy decisions; show how metrics differ for funds vs. banks.
  • Build cheat sheets for swaps, options, and currency overlays tied to hedging the IPS objectives.
  • Practice writing recommendations that explain hedge rationale, cost, and monitoring rules.

Weeks 13-14

Execution, monitoring, and reporting

TM + GIPS
  • Master rebalancing strategies (calendar vs. tolerance bands vs. CPPI) and trade evaluation metrics.
  • Summarise performance evaluation components (return attribution, appraisal ratios) and the GIPS requirements for multi-asset firms.
  • Complete essay sets that require tracking error or performance commentary in less than 15 minutes.

Weeks 15-16

Essay + item-set simulations

Mocks
  • Run two full mock exams per week: one morning essay, one afternoon item-set.
  • After every mock, grade against official rubrics, mark every skipped command word, and rewrite answers within 24 hours.
  • Finalize exam-day plan: IPS templates, formula sheet, calculator keystrokes, and rest schedule.

Essay Workshop

Command word discipline

Highlight ‘calculate’, ‘determine’, or ‘recommend’ before writing. One sentence per point, no storytelling. If the question asks for justification, include the numeric support.

Template thinking

Keep ready-made structures for individual IPS, institutional IPS, and performance evaluation. Copy the headings verbatim into the exam booklet to save time.

Time-box grading

Allocate 1.5 minutes per point. Stop when time expires, leave a gap, and return only if a later question finishes early.

Error log

Track category (concept, command word, computation, careless) plus the fix. Review the log nightly during the final month.
